I believe it’s important to note not only the spiritual significance across many of these cultures, but why the polar bear has become a sacred symbol.

  • For Inuit, Chukchi, and other Arctic peoples, the polar bear is considered a deeply sacred being and often referred to as the “Great Wanderer” or “Spirit of the North.

    • The polar bear’s ability to survive in the harsh Arctic environment symbolizes endurance and adaptability, energies and qualities essential for human survival in those regions.

    • Shamans believed polar bears were spirit guides, capable of traveling between the physical and spiritual realms. This belief stems from the bear’s solitary nature and its mysterious, almost otherworldly presence on the ice.

  • Adaptations for Cold: Their thick double-layered fur and up to 4.5 inches of fat provide insulation against Arctic temperatures as low as -40°F.

  • Coloration: Their fur appears white, blending with snow and ice, but is actually translucent. Beneath it, their skin is black to absorb heat from the sun.

  • Keen Senses: Polar bears have an exceptional sense of smell, detecting seals nearly a mile away or under several feet of snow.

Lifestyle and Behavior:
